Seylaneh Sabz · Investment thesis · Anti-frizz spray, after Color Wow’s Dream Coat · Sep 2026
Color Wow’s Dream Coat is a $30 spray that coats hair in a water-repelling film under the blow-dryer, so frizz can’t come back for three or four washes. It sells 20,000+ a month on Amazon and has sold 696,000 on TikTok Shop; Color Wow grew from $30M to about $300M in five years, and L’Oréal bought it in 2025. In Iran it is already on the shelf — grey-imported, at a median 8.4 million toman, more than its US price — and of the 17 Iranian-made anti-frizz sprays on sale, not one claims to stop humidity. Seylaneh Sabz can make the first.
01 The benchmarks
We mapped the smoothing shelf end to end — anti-frizz, heat-protect, leave-in, shine and blow-out sprays on Amazon, TikTok Shop, Ulta, Boots and brand sites, 1,461 packs from 495 brands — then added the masks, oils and serums they compete with, and kept only the products with a velocity signal we could read ourselves: sold counters, best-seller ranks, “bought in the past month” badges, review volume, press-reported deals. The three Dream Coats come first. Tap any card for its full record.

02 The map
Sorted by the job each product does, the benchmarks split into five lanes. Gloss is the hottest search, but it is a rinse-off mask — a different plant — and L’Oréal already owns it. Heat protectants and leave-ins are commodities; oils and serums are the most crowded shelf there is. Anti-humidity sprays are growing fast and are still one brand wide. We pick the spray: it has a proven $30 price, it is a water-thin liquid cold-mixed and filled like a toner, and Iran already pays for it.

These are deliberately different measures — a ten-year compound forecast against one brand’s five years — and that is the point. A category growing in single digits while its leader grows tenfold means share is still moving. L’Oréal launching two cheaper look-alikes of its own purchase within a year says the same thing from the inside.

The water test made Dream Coat famous; affiliate tutorials sell it now — 13 of the 14 videos TikTok links to the original spray earn commission, and 17 of 19 on the Curly spray. A bathroom, a hair dryer, a glass of water. The cost is casting, not production — and every one of these translates.

08 Formula & process
We read 19 anti-frizz labels. Eleven of them print the same working ingredient — Polysilicone-29, a film-former that cross-links on the hair under blow-dryer heat and keeps water out for several washes: Dream Coat, its Extra Strength, L’ANGE, amika, Marc Anthony, Garnier, L’Oréal Paris, e.l.f., Moroccanoil and John Frieda among them. We found no Color Wow patent on the formula; the polymer is Momentive’s. The recipe is known. Getting the polymer is the first gate.
The formula — INCI, as the leader ships it
That is the whole formula — cold-mixed; the polymer disperses in water without an emulsifier. Dream Coat ships with no fragrance at all. Extra Strength adds two hold polymers from BASF and Ashland; the Curly spray is a different product with no Polysilicone-29. Momentive’s own starting formula for a spray like this is 6% of its CLX-E grade at pH 5.0–5.5.
What kills it
Polysilicone-29 has one maker: Momentive, of Niskayuna, New York, owned by Korea’s KCC since 2024. US rules (31 CFR 560.204) bar selling US goods to Iran, including through a third country, and the US general licences for Iran exclude cosmetics. We found no Iranian, Turkish or UAE listing; a Guangzhou maker prints Polysilicone-29 on its own anti-humidity spray, source unknown. That makes the supply route a question for sanctions counsel before it is one for a chemist.
The other failure is on the head, not in the bottle: 36% of 300 one-star Dream Coat reviews say it did nothing — what happens when it is air-dried instead of blow-dried with tension. The fix is the instructions and the video.
The two silicones are about 98% of the formula’s cost. Glycerin, the preservatives, EDTA and citric acid are sold in Iran; PET bottles and 24 mm mist pumps are sold here.

09 Pack & cost
Color Wow’s bottle is a clear plastic rectangle with a mirror finish on the outside, and a fine-mist pump with a swing-arm nozzle. None of it is proprietary. A Guangzhou factory already sells a clone of the bottle, down to Dream Coat’s label wording, and sprayer makers in Ningbo, Yuyao and Hangzhou list the pump at 10,000 minimum. The ‘plated’ look is a coat, not a material: primer, a vacuum-deposited aluminium layer and a clear topcoat, all on the outside. In the base case the pack lands in Tehran for $0.69, and the filled bottle costs $1.86 — about one-eighteenth of what the grey-imported Dream Coat sells for.

PP won’t hold a coating as it comes out of the mould. Flame, corona or plasma raises its surface energy first, then an adhesion promoter goes on.
surface energy ~30 → 60+ dyne/cm
A UV-cured base coat gives the metal a mirror-smooth surface to sit on.
base coat 10–30 µm
Aluminium is evaporated in a vacuum chamber onto the part. This is the silver.
aluminium 0.1–2 µm
Optional. A tinted mid-coat turns silver into gold, rose or the Curly spray’s gunmetal.
colour development ¥2,000–5,000 one-off
A clear UV topcoat protects the metal. Without it the coat fails the cross-hatch adhesion test; an anti-fingerprint grade exists.
topcoat 10–25 µm
What it costs
Job shops charge ¥30–80 per m² for single-colour silver and ¥80–200 for two-tone, with a 100 m² minimum — about 3,300 bottles. A 200 ml rectangle is about 0.03 m², so the mirror adds roughly $0.14–0.36 a bottle; plated bottles priced with the finish on sell $0.25–0.40 above plain ones. A plated sprayer collar adds $0.02–0.05.
Chinese listings call all of this ‘electroplating’. True wet chrome needs ABS plastic; on PP and PET it is vacuum metallising. The coat sits outside, so it never touches the formula.
What goes wrong
The coat crazes if the bottle wall flexes more than 1–2%, so the bottle must be rigid. Where the topcoat chips, damp air oxidises the aluminium and the coat lifts — a real risk for a product kept in a bathroom.
Cheaper routes to the same look: a metallised label front and back ($0.02–0.18 in China; 1,000 Iranian labels cost 1.7–1.8M T), a full-body metallised shrink sleeve, or an aluminium bottle.

10 The verdict
A thesis is not a yes. It is the list of conditions under which yes is defensible — each with the cheapest test that settles it.
Test: a sanctions-counsel opinion on one named, documented supply route for Polysilicone-29 — or a non-US alternative that matches Dream Coat in the humidity test below. The whole product is that film; without it we are selling another hair milk.
Test: a half-head test against Dream Coat on 30 women in Rasht (83% average humidity) and Tehran (39%), blow-dried by salon stylists and re-read after three shampoos; plus the lab version — ten washes, then an hour at 90% humidity.
Test: anti-frizz, humidity, shine and heat protection only — no ‘repair’, no ‘keratin straightening’ — every claim backed by the lab report inside the TTAC file, and the IRC code issued before a bottle is filled.
Test: a paid-social pilot with the three formats in Persian — the water test filmed in a Rasht bathroom — and a price test between the 1-million-toman hair milks and the 8.4-million-toman import, before scale.
If one fails, we don’t launch. That is the pitch.
